The Upside of Anger

The Upside of Anger | Produced by Jack Binder

The Upside of Anger is an independently financed feature produced by Jack Binder, written and directed by Mike Binder, and distributed by New Line Cinema (a division of Warner Bros.). Starring Joan Allen and Kevin Costner, it blends sharp comedy with emotional drama as a family fractured by abandonment finds unexpected ways to heal.

Story & Themes

Suburban Detroit mother Terry Wolfmeyer (Joan Allen) must raise her four daughters (played by Alicia Witt, Erika Christensen, Keri Russell, and Evan Rachel Wood) after her husband disappears. Terry’s anger, wit, and pride collide with the easygoing charm of neighbor Denny Davies (Kevin Costner), a retired Detroit Tigers pitcher turned radio host. Over four years, loss and love reshape the family’s identity.

Production Overview

Though set in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, principal photography was executed in London due to the lack of incentives in Michigan at the time. As producer, Jack Binder restructured the show to leverage UK studio infrastructure and seasoned British artisans while maintaining the Detroit look and feel. Post-production was completed in both the UK and Los Angeles.

Filming Locations

  • Hampstead, North London – doubled Michigan neighborhood exteriors. The anchor house was identified via aerial vegetation mapping to match Midwestern trees, lot depth, and a wooded backdrop.
  • Ealing Studios – interiors for the Wolfmeyer home and key builds.
  • Bloomfield Hills, Michigan – targeted photography and establishing work.

Music & Score

Original score by Alexandre Desplat, recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra at Angel Studios and conducted by Desplat—an orchestral spine that elevates the film’s emotional architecture.

Budget & Financing

Independently financed. Budget structure prioritized star-driven ATL with cost-efficient UK crews and stages. Delivery and cashflow were modeled to New Line’s requirements, with editorial split between London and Los Angeles to protect finishing.

Distribution & Reception

Released theatrically by New Line Cinema in 2005. The film drew praise for Allen and Costner’s performances and continues to perform in catalogue windows across broadcast and streaming.

Producer’s Insight

“We built Detroit in London—Hampstead neighborhoods and Ealing stages—because incentives shape reality. With British crews and the LSO score, we kept production value high while protecting the schedule and performances.” — Jack Binder
