Toronto International Film Festival (tiff.) 2015

From Bill Murray Day to Morten Tyldum’s “The Imitation Game” taking home The People’s Choice Award, the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival was one for the books. Where: Toronto, Ontario

Tickets: Tickets come in a myriad of packages for purchase on the official website. Though the “my choice” tickets are off sale, you can still purchase “Tiff Choice” packages. These range from 5 tickets for $96 (Daytime Sampler) to $205 (Closing Night Gala). Individual tickets go on sale September 6.

Platform Jury: This year’s Platform Jury comprises Jia Zhang-Ke, Claire Denis, Agnieszka Holland.

Festival Opener

Demolition | Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée

According to its IMDB summary:

An investment banker, struggling to understand his emotional disconnect after the tragic death of his wife, begins to tear apart his life in an effort to see where he went wrong and is ultimately rescued by a woman he meets in a chance encounter.

Jean-Marc Vallée’s latest drama, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Naomi Watts, is going to be one emotional ride. The experienced director, born in Montreal, has been garnering some serious credibility with his last two films “Dallas Buyer’s Club” and “Wild”. The former, which was made on an indie movie budget of just $5 million, made over $55 million at the box office and won Matthew McConaughey an Oscar for best actor.

Anomalisa | Directed by Charlie Kaufman, Duke Johnson

Fans of the legendary writer/director Charlie Kaufman (“Being John Malkovich”, “Adaptation”) are already buzzing about his newest feature “Anomalisa”. This short fable, running 90 minutes, is the writer/director’s first project in stop-motion animation.

Black Mass | Directed by Scott Cooper

“Based on the true story of one of the most notorious gangsters in U.S. history” is the film’s tagline and it stars Johnny Depp as Whitey Bulger. What more could you ask for? The movie, also starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Joel Edgerton, is the third directorial effort for Scott Cooper. He is best known for 2009’s “Crazy Heart” starring Jeff Bridges, which was made on a movie budget of $7 million. Watch the trailer for “Black Mass” below:

 About Ray | Directed by Gaby Dellal

“About Ray”, a trans coming-of-age story starring Susan Sarandon, Naomi Watts, and Elle Fanning, will enjoy its world premiere as one of tiff’s special presentations. According to an article in OUT Magazine, “To prepare for the role, Fanning watched YouTube testimonials of teenagers documenting their transitions and spoke with transgender teens across the country.”

Amazing Grace | Directed by Sydney Pollack, Alan Elliott

According to the official tiff 2015 website, “Amazing Grace” is “The late director Sydney Pollack’s behind-the-scenes documentary about the recording of Aretha Franklin’s best-selling album Amazing Grace finally sees the light of day more than four decades after the original footage was shot.” In other words, it’s a must-see documentary.
